U.S laws on the age of consent in which a minor can legally engage in sexual activities is currently flawed and needs improvement.
Consent laws are arbitrary assigned predominantly based on culture, demographics and appropriation, leading to immense ambiguity. Globally, the age of consent varies as well. Many western European countries such as Germany and Italy's consensual age is 14, with some going even lower, such as Japan at 13.
U.S federal law has the age of consent set at 16. However, each state dictates the level of severity for punishment, excusable circumstances and the age of consent of consent itself.
